A graduate of Business Information Technology, Edwin heads the Business Development for Sun Synergy Sdn. Bhd. which is the exclusive distributor for several international architectural flooring products such as: Latham Australia, Progress Profiles Italy, Movex Singapore and Vexcolt from UK.

“Having been involved in more than 50 flooring projects during my short 9 years with Sun Synergy, my part would mainly be involved as an advisory and technical role in each of the projects.”

“Sun Synergy alongside with Sun Synergy Contracts has been involved in some of the prominent projects in Malaysia which includes the KLCC Twin Tower & Suria Mall, KLIA, EQ Hotel, Pavilion Shopping Centre, Ikea Cheras, Sunway Velocity Mall, Mid Valley floor refurbishment and KL city’s public network transport – both LRT and MRT projects.”

What made you decide to go do this business and get involve particularly in the industry?
It is a gradual family business succession that I got involved in the company’s sales at first. Sun Synergy has been in the construction material trading business since 1999. We were fortunate to be given the exclusive Malaysia distributorship for several world famous construction material brands.

As with family business succession, I slowly turned into my personal passion to develop the company’s offering. Initially when I joined, I believed that I could contribute a lot into marketing the products that we carry – which was lacking in the industry. Slowly my passion has evolved into more than just marketing the product but to make Malaysia a better and safer place by using our products.

The value we provide to our clients
Unlike most generic contractors we have extensive knowledge with retailers and commercial premises and understand their requirements. We do not just sell the products, we do a lot of advisory and planning work with the architects and stakeholders. We assist them to understand how and why we should adopt internationally acceptable standards to raise the safety & educational value on our product & services.

Some insights to share with regards to the industry and/or marketplace
As we’re nearing the end of a pandemic, we expect the retail and small medium industry will once more flood the market within these few years. As a lot of new business and industry is starting to move towards online business, it won’t be surprising to see many companies will downsize their required working space – opting for WFH culture or a hybrid in between.

Additionally, for the past decade we noticed an incline on safety requirements, this has been accelerated by the influx of overseas architecture students that have been exposed to the safety standards of first world countries.

These experience and standards requirements that they bring back to our country will unknowingly benefit our Malaysian public as the safety flooring industry begins to emulate. I have high hopes that the industry and marketplace for safety flooring continues to bloom in the coming decades.

Challenges and opportunities for Malaysian businesses in the construction sector
As mentioned previously, we expect the small and medium industry to pick up within these few years and that in turn will help boost the commercial sector – especially renovation and small scale projects which also includes demolition and reduction of work spaces. That would be a good opportunity for us to contribute to their development.

The bane of lackadaisical enforcement on our industry is also an opportunity for us to be the pioneer in educating and championing the safety of flooring for everyone in Malaysia. Ultimately we would love to be a part of this change and see a “universal access design” being standardised throughout Malaysia in the near future.

One of the biggest challenges would possibly be current manpower in the industry which are very much lacking. As during the pandemic many foreign workers has returned to their home country, with the travel restriction all over the world this has created a big vacuum that has yet to be filled. We’re crossing our fingers that this situation might improve as we move towards the endemic.

Clients or contacts that I would like to be connected to or get in touch with
I would love to be connected to mainly project architects and project interior designers, where I could provide assistance to their project. On another spectrum, I would also like to be in touch with the Dean of Universities where they offer architectural or interior design courses. We could then engage with the students where we can give educational insights on the flooring safety industry as a whole.
